Charlaine Harrisの「Southern Vampire」シリーズを原作に長編「American Beauty」の脚本家とドラマ「Six Feeet Under」の制作総指揮で知られているAlan Ballが脚本・監督を手がける新TVドラマ、「True Blood 」（9月7日からHBOで放送）の一場面．他人の心を読むことができるヒロインと、人間たちとの共存を目指す吸血鬼とのラブストーリー．映像は、ホワイトハウスのスポークスマンが記者会見を開いて吸血鬼の存在をあかす一場面. やりとりがあまりにもリアルで滑稽.

this is one sequence from the show where the white-house spokesman announces to the press core that wampie exists among us. The show is to be ired on September 7th on HBO.

ＳＦ作家Arthur C. Clarkeが亡くなった．先日表した宇宙計画に対する不信感は、彼の「地球幼年期の終わり」を連想してのもの．

あるとき、ニューヨークの上空５万メートルの彼方に「オーバーマインド」（主上心）という巨大な銀色の円盤が留まったまま動かなくなった．いいかげん地球上の衝突や功利をやめないかぎり、ここを動かないという．
全無線周波数帯を通じて演説をし、地上のそれぞれ勝手な主張などが通用する時代に一瞬にして幕を下ろす。地上のすべての決定力よりも、この知的円盤体が下す決定や指導のほうが、あきらかに地球全体の知恵を足したものよりも秀れたものであると了解される…．

きっとClarke氏は、人類にとっては特定の宗教に属するような神ではない文字通り「オーバーマインド」のような存在が必要と考えたのでしょう．おそらく「宇宙…それは最後のフロンティア…」であるから、そこから答えが出るはずだったのだが、地球人が西部劇のガンマンよろしく強大なメタルの鉄砲を空に向けたところで何を達成したと言うのか．
